Meeting Description:

Hey everybody!

Hope you're all enjoying the AMAZING weather out there but also that you manage to tear yourselves away from the beautiful sunshine long enough to sit down in front of your computers and read about our next meetup event! :o)

This Sunday, April 20th get ready to strut your colossal culinary skills (or your takeout ordering skills ;) at the Toronto Animal Rights Society (TARS) vegan potluck and film night! I attend these potlucks regularly and, without sounding too biased, I have to say that they're always a truly enjoyable evening out. Lots of great people, loads of fabulous food, and, of course always something to entertain the participants with after dinner.

Dinner will run from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. followed by the film from aprox. 7:00 p.m. to 8:20 p.m.
This Sunday we'll be screening a documentary called "Seeing Through the Fence" by filmmaker Eleni Vlachos and as a special bonus Eleni will be at the potluck for the screening and available for group discussion and Q&A after the film. Here's a quick writeup on the film that I cut and pasted into this announcement:

"This brand new documentary is as enjoyable as it is enlightening. Filmmaker Eleni Vlachos brings an honest and humourous touch to exploring the views that govern our relationships with animals. Through interviews with friends, family, activists, and random strangers we see how complex, poorly understood, and truly interesting our views towards animals really are. The interweaving of Eleni's family members and their divergent views on animals brings a heart warming touch to this film. Beyond all, this documentary brings hope, as we discover that even those who oppose animal rights do so in spite of their good hearts. For the
activist, this film will give you perspective. For the meat eater, this film will give you second thought."

And here's a link http://www.youtube.co... to the film's trailer.

So Paul, you may be asking yourself......what do I bring to this fabulous night out?!?

Well, just so there's no confusion, here's the official TARS response on that.....

"If you are bringing a dish of food, make a large portioned recipe that is designed to serve 8-10 people (there is never a shortage of hungry people at these events!). There are plenty of great vegan recipe books that can help you out with ideas. Beverages are always necessary and are an easy alternative to cooking or baking. If you are bringing a beverage, a large carton or jug of juice or water will work very well.

Dishes should be free of animal meat (including fish and chicken), and direct animal derivatives such as dairy products and eggs. Some of us prefer to avoid eating honey, so using an alternative will enable everyone to enjoy your food. Also please avoid using soy cheeses with "casein" (milk protein) listed as an ingredient. Bring a small piece of paper with a list of potential allergens (nuts, wheat, etc.) to place beside your dish. Two stoves and a microwave are available if your food needs to be warmed. Since this is a family-friendly event, and after-dinner educational events require clear attention, all beverages should be non-alcoholic. Non-disposable plates, bowls, glasses, cutlery, and cloth napkins are provided courtesy of TARS. Compost and recycling is available for leftovers."

So, in other words, bring enough to feed a few and just make sure it's totally vegan! ;)

Also from TARS, here's some directions for getting over there:

That's it! I'm hoping I'll see many of you there and, if I've forgotten to mention anything or if you have any questions, by all means send me an email and I'll do what I can to answer them!

See you all soon!

Paul :o)
