1 attended (est.) – No rating yet November is now fully upon us and it's that time of year once again for the Toronto Vegetarian Association's Annual General Meeting!* This event is a great opportunity for members to get together (you can sign up as a member at the AGM if you're not already one), share some good eats (courtesy of TVA), find out what the organization has been up to for the past year, what it's plans are for the upcoming year, and, perhaps most importantly, vote for which candidate(s) you would like to serve on the TVA's Board of Directors. I'm sending a slightly different call-out to everyone this year as I've also "thrown my hat in the ring" as one of the candidates competing for a spot on the board. As such I'm asking that you come out and vote for me so that I may help the TVA in fulfilling it's mission to support the veg community, and it's mandate to "emancipate the animal kingdom from all forms of cruelty and exploitation" as set out in it's acts of incorporation. This year's AGM is being held on Thursday, November 19th, from 6pm to 9:30pm, at the FoodShare offices at 90 Croatia St. (entrance is on Brock Ave.) one block south of Bloor, and one block west of Dufferin. Easy to get to by TTC (Dufferin Station is just a 5 min. walk away) and there appears to be ample parking on all of the side streets. Here's a link to a map to help get you there: http://maps.google.c I'll be sending along further information and a reminder as we get closer to the event but, in the meantime, I'd like to thank each and every one of you for all that you do to support, and help animals in your daily lives. Hope to see you all soon! Paul Figueiras NOTE: Although you can attend this event even if you're not currently a member by signing up for a membership at the AGM, you are only eligible to vote if your membership was begun by Oct. 20th of this year. *page neither endorsed or supported by Toronto Vegetarian Association |

Please read on and come out if you can: "OF ALL THE FILMS I HAVE EVER MADE, THIS IS THE ONE THAT GETS PEOPLE TALKING THE MOST. FOR EVERY ONE PERSON WHO SEES EARTHLINGS,THEY WILL TELL THREE." -Joaquin Phoenix, actor/narrator The movie will begin at about 7:30, but if you want to arrive earlier and socialize or devour our food, then that is even better. If you have any questions, please contact Jamie Rivet at jriv@sympatico.ca See 'ya all soon! Paul :) |

Hey! Here's an activism event that's happening this upcoming Friday..... Most people don't know that fur trim on coats, gloves, hats, purses, and many other items, is likely to be real. And how could they, when by law companies are not obligated to label fur garnments under $150.00. The unsuspectecting person could easily be deceived while animals are victimized in incomprehensible ways. This is why we will be there to inform the public about the suffering and cruelty that animals raised and trapped for their fur and fur trim endure. Why The Bay? The Hudson's Bay Company had agreed to stop selling fur in 1991 in response to anti-fur demonstrations and customer complaints. In 1997 The Bay had once again reopened it's market to fur. We know that we can help guide The Bay to becoming compassionate fur-free store again through customer response to this unnessary cruelty. Along with Toronto groups, Montreal, Barrie, and Ottawa animal right groups will also be starting demonstrations at Bay stores in their cities. And the momentum is growing. What will we be doing? Activists will be holding graphic posters, handing out leaflets, and educating the public about where fur comes from and how it is 'produced.' DATE: Friday, Oct 23, 2009 For more information contact: Laura Lee or Andre Inglis cfa_laura@yahoo.ca Hope to see you there! |

1 attended (est.) – No rating yet hey, hey, HEY!!!! Here's an upcoming event that I'm SURE you won't want to miss so come on out, this upcoming Tuesday, September 29th, 7pm-9pm, at The Royal Cinema (608 College St. West, Toronto, $10 admission) for the Toronto premiere of the 2009 documentary "Cat City"! I haven't seen the film but it promises to be an extremely honest and unrepentant look at the current issue of cat overpopulation in Toronto. Here's the trailer http://www.youtube.c ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For years, euthanizing unwanted animals has been seen as a viable solution by animal control agencies to deal with cat overpopulation. Now cat rescue groups, shelter workers and humane societies alike are calling for a stop to the needless killing of healthy, adoptable animals and are demanding humane alternatives. Cat City takes the viewer into the heart of the issue of cat overpopulation by going to the frontlines of the crisis in Canada, following grassroots activists, shelter workers and cat lovers as they tirelessly work to rescue these lost and abandoned animals. What does it tell us about our society when an animal becomes as disposable as a pop can? Featuring Toronto Cat Rescue, So, although the movie starts at 7pm I'm suggesting that anyone who would like to try and meetup so we could head in as a group be in front of the theatre sometime between 6:30 and 6:45pm. I'm shooting for 6:30 myself as I'm not sure what the lineups will be like. Take a look at my profile pics on here if you don't know me so you'll recognize me. Afterward I'm thinking (for anyone who'd like and is able to) we could head off somewhere local for a beverage/bite/chat, etc... so we can share thoughts on the film (or anything else for that matter!). As well, here's a link to a google map of the theatre: http://maps.google.c The cinema is on the College Streetcar line and about a 15 minute walk south from Christie Station. If you're taking the subway please note that there is no transit connection from that station to College St. If that's what you're looking for you'll need to go to either Ossington or Bathurst stations and head south from there to College where you can transfer to the College Streetcar or simply walk (about a 6-8 minute walk from either intersection). There should be on street parking available on both College and side streets for those who will be driving. Questions? Comments? Salutations? Feel free to contact me through email or on my cell (416-648-3275). Hope to see many of you there! Paul :) |

Hey everybody! First off let me say that I hope you've all had an absolutely wonderful summer and too bad that it's now come to an end..... :( But, on a more positive note, it's time once again for the TVA Veggie Food Fair, the largest of it's kind in North America, so let's all get out and enjoy it! I think it would be fun for us all to meet and go check out Ben Shaberman's talk called "Off the Warpath" which runs from 12 - 1 pm on Saturday, Sept. 12th. I'm suggesting that we meet at 11:30 am on the grassy hill located on the east side of Ann Tindal Park (which is on the west side of the York Quay Centre which is the main event building for the Food Fair...here's a map: http://www.harbourfr Speaking of the talk (nice segue, huh? ;) here's a little blurb from the TVA website on it: OFF THE WARPATH: There's nothing funny about being vegan, unless you're humorist Ben Shaberman. Vegetarianism and veganism are often viewed as radical lifestyles by the general public. While many of us who are meat-free frequently discuss and promote our opinions very passionately, a more light-hearted and gentle approach can be more effective. From dog chases to fornicating grasshoppers to chicken stock sabotage, Shaberman explores the lighter side of the meat-free lifestyle. Afterward I was thinking we could all go grab a bite to eat in the food tent (yummy yummy!) and later on we could also check out some of the other talks (looks like there's a good one happening at 3 pm as well) or whatever strikes our fancy! Also, for those who haven't had the chance, it would also be a great opportunity to renew your TVA membership! For those who don't yet have one this would also be a very convenient time to get one. There are lots of benefits to having a membership with TVA including (but not limited to): Receiving the TVA Newsletter "Lifelines" PLUS the knowledge that you'll also be helping to fund great programs like: Veg.ca - a comprehensive website, excellent source for recipes, information and more All this for just a minimum donation (tax deductible) of $20! I hate to sound like such a cheerleader (ok, maybe not ;) but really, this is money that's pretty well spent. If you prefer, you can also get your membership online here: http://veg.ca/conten Ok, now for anyone who's not already aware, the Vegetarian Food Fair is happening at it's usual location at Harbourfront Centre at 235 Queens Quay West just west of Lower Simcoe St. To get there by TTC you can take either the 509 or 510 streetcars from Union (or just walk down...it's about one kilometre), the 509 from Exhibition, or the 510 from Spadina station. For anyone driving there's a paid parking lot just east of the building and I believe another one if you go just north on Lower Simcoe St. Here's a link to TVA's website for more info on the Veggie Food Fair: http://veg.ca/conten Any questions please feel free to send them along and if you're running late (or can't find us) feel free to call my cell at 416-648-3275. Hope to see many of you on Saturday and remember, if you can't make it out to meet us, the Food Fair also runs on Friday night and Sunday all day so you can still check it out! :) YAY!!!! Paul :o) |

1 attended (est.) – No rating yet Soooooooo.....a few of us are planning on going to the Open House at Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary this upcoming Saturday and I thought maybe some more of you lovely veg*an peeps might like to join us! Here's the copy from the website: Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary is home to over twenty primates, including: spider monkeys, baboons, lemurs, marmosets and Japanese macaques. The residents have been retired from the pet trade, road side zoos, research and entertainment. Our mission is to provide a dignified, safe permanent home, and to educate the public about the plight of primates in Ontario. Once a year, we open our gates to the public for a special day of activities including: games, jumble sale, raffles, silent auction, food, music and fun! During the afternoon, we will be hosting small tour groups to meet and get to know the primates. Cost: $5.00 per person or $15.00 for a group of four Here's a link to their website (http://www.storyboo As well, here's a link (http://maps.google. The open house goes from noon to 4 pm so, if you stay to the end, you should be back in the city by about 6:30 pm. As with many out of town events, usually the biggest issue is linking up drivers with those who need a ride so, if you can offer or need a ride, please do send me an email asap to planetvegan@hotmail. Here's the info. I'll need in that email: If you can OFFER someone a ride please state what part of the city you'll be leaving from, preferred passenger pickup point(s) (like a subway station), the approximate time you're planning to head out, and a telephone contact number. If you NEED a ride please state what part of the city you'll be leaving from, preferred pickup point(s) (like a subway station), the approximate time you can head out, and a telephone contact number. I will do my level best to hook up drivers and riders BUT I can't guarantee that you'll definitely get a ride. It should go without saying as well, but it is generally expected that passengers will chip in fuel funds to their driver. That's it! Hope to see many of you on Saturday! Paul :) |

3 attended (est.) – No rating yet Alright folks....a little short notice here but, if you're free this Friday August, 7th, then come on out for a delicious meal at M & B Yummy followed by a post-dinner performance by musical dynamic duo "The Tandooris"! Dinner will be at 7 pm with the live music beginning around 9 pm so, even if you can't stay for the music, at least you'll be able to have a nice social dinner! :) The address for the restaurant is 1263 Queen Street West (here's a map: http://maps.google.c Here's a link to their website http://www.mbyummy.c Just as a little aside, in addition to having tasty food, M & B Yummy is also, to my knowledge, the only fully veg Ethiopian Restaurant in Toronto which, just for that should garner our support BUT, if that weren't enough, it'll also be the last in-town performance by The Tandoori's for the foreseeable future as they're moving to Baltimore on Monday! :) Any questions, just send me a message and I'll do my best to answer them and I hope to see many of you there!!! Spring is upon us and the weather's getting better, so why not come out on Saturday, April 25th from 11 am to 5 pm as UTCARE celebrates and caps off Earth Week by hosting our very first Animal Rights Eco-Fair! This will be a really fun and informational day with guest speakers Harold "Farmer" Brown (President and founder of FarmKind and featured in the film Peaceable Kingdom), tabling by various local animal rights/enviro groups, TWO movie screenings (The Witness and Peaceable Kingdom) as well as a FREE super yummy vegan feast prepared by sensational campus cooking collective HotYam! We're holding the event at the International Student Centre located at 33 St. George St. just north of College Street. If you're coming by TTC it's just a 5 min. walk west from Queen's Park Station on the University/Spadina line. Drivers are probably best off parking on one of the side streets in the area. Admission is FREE so come one, come all, as this will be one event that you won't want to miss! As always, direct any questions or comments my way and I'll do my best to answer them! Hope to see you all there! Paul :) |

3 attended (est.) – No rating yet Hey kids!!!! This Saturday, April 11th at 8pm come on out to the El Mocambo, listen to some music, dance, and help.... SAVE OUR SHARKS!! For those who aren't aware shark populations worldwide are down about 90% (thanks mainly to the shark fin and shark cartilage industries) so we've got to do what we can to raise money and awareness for this issue so we don't have this species go extinct. There's going to be three awesome bands on the roster that night: Does it get any better????? YES!!!!!!!!! In addition to the above the first 100 guests to arrive WILL RECEIVE A FREE GIFT FROM LUSH!!!! WOW!!!!! Now that's value people! Doors open at 8:00PM and tickets are only $10 at the door with a non-perishable food item or $12 without.... Make sure you're there early enough to get your gift! :) The El Mocambo is super easy to get to being located on the west side of Spadina just south of College. Both the Spadina and College streetcars will get you there directly but it's also just a short walk north from Dundas for those who live along that line. For the drivers in the group, there is on street paid parking on both Spadina and College and, indeed, all over the area on side streets. Since the doors open at 8pm I'm planning to be there no later than 7:45 so, if anyone would like to "meet up" (get it? meetup??? ;) so we can go in and hang out as a group, just look for me on the sidewalk out front at that time (and hopefully we'll be early enough to get those free gifts! ;) I'm also planning to do dinner ahead of the show at the newly re-opened King's Cafe on Augusta just south of Baldwin at 6pm.....all are welcome to join and, in that case, we'll just walk (about 5 mins) over to the show as a group...check the other meetup announcement for that...
