Hello My Animal Advocate Friends,

Come join us for the triumphant return of Vegan Toastmasters on Saturday, December 5th. PLEASE NOTE THE MEETING STARTS AT 10 AM.

Saturday, December 5th from 10:00 am - 11:30 pm there is another Vegan Toastmasters meeting. These meetings are wonderful! Basically, it's a group set up to help people with public speaking, and more specifically how to discuss vegan issues fluidly. Have you ever been confronted by someone regarding an animal rights issue and you wish you knew exactly what to say as eloquently as possible? What about speaking to City Council about why they should pass a ban on declawing? This group helps you deal with those situations.

It's an amazingly fun and friendly atmosphere. I look forward to going every time. A lot of the time, people bring vegan treats to share. There is not any obligation or expectation for guests to bring food, but if you really want to bring a vegan item to share, you are welcome to do so.

If you can't make it to this next meeting, perhaps you can join us in the future. We meet on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

This meeting will be at the Whole Foods store located at National and Barrington, on the second floor (look for the Vegan Toastmasters sign and go through the employee lounge on the 2nd floor). Please park on the street in the residential area around the store, because the store parking lot only allows 1 hr parking and the meeting lasts 1.5 hrs.

Here is a more formal explanation of the group:

The mission of Vegan Toastmasters is to provide a supportive environment for vegans to learn and practice speaking and leadership skills. As vegans, we need to put forth as strong and effective a message as possible on behalf of those beings without a voice. Speeches relating to the many aspects of veganism are encouraged. For further info, visit www.vegantoastmasters.org.

Hope to see you there,

Hello fellow UAALA members,

Celebrate Thanksgiving the fun AND compassionate way at the annual Vegan Thanksgiving Free Rancho Park Potluck Picnic!!

Once a year hundreds of vegans gather together at Rancho Park, located at the corner of Pico and Motor Ave. in West Los Angeles for a compassionate vegan Thanksgiving potluck picnic.
Celebrants come from far and wide to participate in the longest running once-a-year vegan tradition in Los Angeles.
Historically attendees number from 150 on the low side to 450 on the high side.
This event is a community run event, and is free to anyone in the community who wants to spend a Thanksgiving together where all truly have reason to give thanks, including the animals that are not being eaten here. It is a casual, fun, and meaningful afternoon in the park, which has historically had beautiful weather, (but, in the event of rain, those who still want to gather will do so in the rain).
Featured are literature tables, and an open mike. Attendees are encouraged to bring musical instruments, as well as balls, frisbees, and other games to play in the spacious open park setting. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.
While this is a free event, attendees should bring a vegan dish to share, (to serve at least eight), with a card stating the ingredients of the creation, (especially for those with food allergies about which they need to be conscious). Also, it is important that attendees bring any serving utensils needed for their dishes, as well as washable/reusable plates, cups, napkins and utensils for personal usage.

Date: Thursday, November 26, 2009 (In case of rain, the event will be postponed until next year)
11:00 am--Gathering, Setting-Up, Mingling
12:00 p.m.--Opening Circle of Thanks
12:10 p.m.--Feasting

Again, Bring your favorite vegan holiday dish to serve 8 to10 people. Please include a note listing the ingredients, and be sure to bring a serving utensil.
Be ecological and take along your own place setting, including a reusable cup, bowl, plate, utensils, and washable cloth napkin.
Fun for the whole family--all ages welcome.
No RSVP necessary--just come and enjoy a Thanksgiving where all are truly able to be thankful!
Food items should be strictly vegan, having no animal ingredients: no meat, (which includes no chicken or fish), no dairy, no eggs, no honey, no bone-processed sugar, and no alcohol.
This is also a smoke-free event.
Directions: Located about 2 miles North of 10 Freeway and about 2 miles East of 405 Freeway. From 10 Freeway, exit on Overland Ave. Go North about a mile to Pico. Go East on Pico for about a mile to Motor. Turn right and follow the "VEG" signs to the gathering location. Or take Pico Boulevard East of the 405 to make a right, south on Motor, enter the first parking lot on the right, all the way back -- we set-up at the picnic tables back across the grass.

Hope to see you there!

Bruins for Animals is holding its annual "Thanks-go-Vegan" event this week! If you are available for an hour or two to come help with set up, clean up or most importantly outreach and talk to students about turkeys and other animals abused in factory farms then we would love to have you join us! Feel free to pass this along to others who might be able to help us with outreach at UCLA this Thursday!

Map: http://www.ucla.edu/map/

Contact: Ashley Smith (President BFA) sunflower22@ucla.edu)

THANKS-GO-VEGAN EVENT
Thursday, November 19th 10am-2pm
Bruin Plaza - By the Bruin Bear, next to Ackerman and the outdoor stage - there will be a table set up in this open plaza
Come help us pass out free food and flyers to educate the public that “compassionate” and “Thanksgiving” are two words that should be synonymous! We will be handing out cookies, gardein sandwiches, and potato salad…please feel free to contribute food and your time!
Parking is a bit expensive on campus ($10 for the day)...Lot 2 is the closest to the event and you pay by space in that machine (follow instructions on machine) OR if you can find parking for free on the streets near the apartments to the west of campus that would be ideal (but watch street signs) or there is 2 hours for free in the public parking structure on Broxton, however that is a bit of a hike up.

You can come when you have time...come early or late....up to you! :) Event ends at 2pm for clean up. Pass this e-mail on to other great activists who may have time! Thank you!

Dear UAALA members,

This event was brought to my attention by one of our members, Brian. Please read below for the full details (written by Brian):

This event is taking place this Thursday Nov. 5th between 4:30PM and 7PM outside The Royal Danish Consulate in Los Angeles, 10877 Wilshire Boulevard in West Los Angeles!!! This is YOUR opportunity to have an impact on a possible ban of fur in Denmark and the European Union! Literally, what happens in the weeks to come can be a deciding factor. Last week I came to realize, that while growing up I had been shielded from some of the largest undertakings in the history of animal cruelty, right in my back yard so to speak. I immediately wrote a letter and sent it off to domestic and international organizations and individuals: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=177788119360&ref=mf I'm arranging banners, leaflets, soy candles etc. at this very moment. However, if you have any ideas or materials of you own, please do let me know. Now, please come take part in one of the first international demonstrations against the Danish fur industry and in support of a Danish and EU ban on fur!

Dear UAALA members,

The next opportunity for vegan outreach leafletting with simultaneous video projection of videos that show what animals endure on factory farms and slaughterhouses will be this Saturday, October 31st, 6-8 pm.

Aouie and other activists will be on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, most likely between Santa Monica Blvd and Broadway (likely close to Broadway). If you have trouble finding us, please call Aouie at 213-675-4266. We'll be leafletting to passersby during this time (6-8 pm). This is a "Friendly Interactions Only" event to encourage newcomers to be receptive to our message.

There should be more than enough literature to last the evening. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to let me know in advance. I won't be at this particular outreach since I'm planning to attend the Stray Cat Alliance fundraiser party instead that evening.

This outreach event is a great way to spread compassion and educate people about the animals' plight.

As always, whether you can make it or not, please RSVP to show your involvement in the group.

Hope you can make it,
Armaiti

UAALA members,

Here is a special opportunity tonight, thanks to UCLA's Bruins for Animals, to hear from a credible source why animal experiments have scientific problems (not reliable for arriving at conclusions pertinent to humans).

Dr. Ray Greek is the President and Co-Founder of Americans for Medical Advancement. He has written a book called "Sacred Cows and Golden Geese" which goes into all the problems with using animal experiments to extrapolate human health information and explores the pros and cons of animal testing from a medical and historical perspective. He is board certified in anesthesiology, and taught at both the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine, in addition to running his own private practice. He has come to talk about and argue for the need for alternatives in animal testing on a purely scientific basis. Bring a friend!

Should be a great talk! Hope to see many of you there!
